Some more than others….but I guess I’m allowed to have favorites. Each block is 16 inches wide by 20 inches tall. I plan on a non-straight kind of oceany sashing. Still debating if I will order white silk and dye it? My dying silk sometimes consists of me using it for a sponge and different dyes….I do love surprises when it comes to dying ribbon and fabric. Probably won’t even tackle the sashing until Christmas time. I still have two of the ladies unembellished and so will have to get them all done before I can decide what exactly I want to do when I put it together. The octopus is the center block…that is decided. They could all use a little more seaweed….maybe more little fishies.

It was mentioned to me that their TA-TAs may be a problem with showing. Might be considered offensive. I thought maybe I would present it to the show committee and see how they feel. Attendees may not like it. So….the burning question is: Do I break out the sequins and make them all bras? What do you think?

<img title="001" style="border-top: 0px; However, what is in my head is not what I’m getting. I need to take a deep breath and block out interference when I am piecing. I have crates (yes crates) of lace and I’m not organized. I’m better this time than I was when I pieced the mermaid quilt. Tomorrow I will take pictures of my mermaids and post them. Anyway….I know I have some really, really cool lace here somewhere and I need to take a weekend and just go through it all.

Below on the left is the pieced block and on the other left is the embellished block. What is really great about working in a small area (10 inches at widest point) is that I see progress quickly.

My 5 am sewing sessions seem so productive

Lisa in Nevadahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18386098562082656317noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1869250523806699719.post-25758516456083669462013-07-26T19:26:00.001-07:002013-07-26T19:26:34.477-07:00Prisoner of Love
I doodle….all the time. I find it very freeing. My imagination seems to work better when I’ve been doodling. Some of my best embroidery designs come from doodling. So did the beaded spiders.

Sometimes quilt designs float to the top when I’m not focused and just doodling little designs. Prisoner of love is like that. I have the pattern about half written. I love this pattern and plan on making a full size bed quilt when I get a chance. I doodled this one about three years ago before I had thought of writing patterns.

Lisa in Nevadahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18386098562082656317noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1869250523806699719.post-44254196741847973652013-07-24T08:01:00.001-07:002013-07-24T08:01:59.865-07:00Arsenic and Old Lace
I’ve started on Arsenic and Old Lace. I don’t know what possessed me to do it in a hexagon pattern. Putting them together may just be a challenge. I’m thinking maybe black sashing between the blocks with red triangles at the corners.

I have no idea how big this will be. I guess it depends on when I get tired of piecing blocks. It will give me a chance to use some of that massive stash of lace I have. I had a large stash already when a lady from my guild brought me a HUGE box of lace that had been her mother’s stash. I have no shortage of fabric and embellishment; I’m at the point where I just can’t find what I’m looking for.

Lisa in Nevadahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18386098562082656317noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1869250523806699719.post-61724973122053017662013-07-21T05:31:00.001-07:002013-07-21T05:31:56.459-07:00Have you ever threaded a treadle sewing machine?
I was sitting down to experiment with the movie program in my laptop and found this video I made last year and forgot about it. The Carson Valley Quilt Guild had a heritage exhibit at their show where we demonstrated crazy quilting, hand quilting and working with a treadle machine. We also had an incredible display of antique quilts. We had talks about their history and dating antique quilts. I think it was one of the highlights of the quilt show.

The two hilarious ladies in this video are Loyann and Marilyn…two delightful quilters with a tremendous amount of talent between them. Loyann had so much fun demonstrating the Treadle machine that she has been making a quilt top on a treadle. Marilyn is one of the most talented hand quilters and applique artists I have ever seen.

<img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjI5Xulgbp1HQVygqx_SV9_d_Ghi1XoUZiZz53s9VgjD1aTagdlxLFqYOFhSrtyWJ4B2jPFGkrcjX6pDkLxoVpatRB_LJLojo9XC_E2KPCAVTrlvUywM85C4YVMlQhKa1rWh8DVn8uyuPw/?imgmax=800" style="border-style: none" galleryimg="no" onload="var downlevelDiv = document.getElementById('b06982a8-741a-4661-98bc-b4b002205d23'); downlevelDiv.innerHTML = "

";" alt="">

Threading a treadle sewing machine in preparation for a demonstration at the Carson Valley Quilt Show

Lisa in Nevadahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18386098562082656317noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1869250523806699719.post-14573621280484759602013-07-20T18:41:00.001-07:002013-07-20T18:41:38.380-07:00Exciting News – My Book is out

I stepped out of my box again. Feels good to do that. I published my book on Craftsy.com and I have had so many wonderful comments and a great deal of encouragement. This is volume one. Stitch combinations, etc.

The picture on the cover of the book was supposed to be part of a challenge quilt last year, but it made the quilt too big for the challenge…so it was just hanging on the wall waiting for something special.

http://www.craftsy.com/pattern/embroidery/hand-embroidery/little-book-of-crazy-quilt-embellishment/61465

Lisa in Nevadahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18386098562082656317noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1869250523806699719.post-21875260127663914472013-07-01T13:13:00.001-07:002013-07-01T13:18:22.278-07:00Sewing Expo and Stuff

Chinky has been moved into the living room and I’m reorganizing my sewing room. I’m horrified. I mean…at what point did I become one button jar away from an episode of Hoarders? At this point I have Five (count them…5!) full gallon jars of buttons. Almost all are vintage. And then I came across an organizer box with all these vintage buttons neatly divided by color. This doesn’t count the other embellishments. I have three more boxes (so far) to tackle and I know there are going to be baggies of buttons in one of them. Somebody is going to have a blast digging through my stuff after I die…..

I went to the sewing expo in Reno. Spent quite a few hours there. I had a chair entered in “The Chariatable Affair” contest. Didn’t win, but it was fun. Saw lots of people there that I knew….but it was Allie Aller’s quilts that stole the show. I wish that I had taken close ups, but I didn’t. There was a gorgeous Heart quilt, but that was one of my blurry pictures. I really need to take a tripod with me.
<img style="background-image: none; Tomorrow is my surgery and I’m going in feeling very upbeat and relaxed. I spent the weekend working in the “Our Quilting Heritage” exhibit at the quilt show. It was very, very popular. We had a number of antiques (plus the fairy quilt “Dreamweaver” on display along with demonstrations of how to properly hand quilt for tiny tiny even stitches (I learned a lot), operating a treadle machine, and crazy quilting. I got to spend the whole weekend discussing my favorite subject. There was enormous interest in crazy quilting

I had four quilts entered. One challenge and the three others allowed for guild members. I won a first in mixed media small, a second in abstract non-representational, the third in the challenge that was already displayed at the library…and one disqualification. On “Neptune’s Garden” the judge said that the definition of a quilt is three layers of fabric held together with thread…and I thought “well hell, that’s the last time I spend a week hiding my tying”. LOL

She did go on to note the yellow submarine and that the embellishments were extremely well done. I actually got very good comments and now know what I need to concentrate on for my next quilt.

Overall it was the best show I have entered or attended to date. Had a wonderful weekend.

Fabric Chicks has asked if they can hang my quilts in their booth at the Sewing Expo in Reno next week…so they will be displayed there. I hang out in Beth’s shop quite a bit and teach there every month so I figure this is another good chance to get my work exposed.

Arachnophobia II: The Sequel

Pickled Ginger

Loyann (on the treadle) and me

Lisa in Nevadahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18386098562082656317noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1869250523806699719.post-33257490728766039432012-06-02T08:51:00.001-07:002012-06-02T08:58:45.252-07:00A Wonderful Antique Crazy Quilt

Here are some wonderful pictures taken by Janie Cattoor of Douglas County, Nevada. This is a crazy quilt made by Anna Emma Gavin who was born in 1857 in Kentucky and died in 1940 Montana (I bet she had some stories to tell!). The names embroidered reflect members of Anna’s family. The designs that she embroidered came from a watercolor book. The quilt was made in and dated 1888.

This beautiful quilt is in the guardianship of Anna’s niece, Doris Bennet of Genoa, Nevada. The hot water heater died…and of course, it is one that is very difficult to find. Lowe’s tells me it will be twice as much as we were originally quoted and then it will be six to eight weeks before we get it. Thank You Champion Homes for selling me this piece of crap home. Nothing fits. Nothing is standard size and if you do try to fix something it breaks something else. And yet I keep making payments…oh, and then the oven went out and the dryer went out and the truck broke down. Oh and I have to pay my portion for surgery in cash this week. I’m standing in the middle of this and every time I think this has to be the last of it, something else happens. Sigh. I know I will live though heating water on the stovetop sucks big time.

I’ve been busy too. I’m working on some mermaids blocks.

Buffalo Gals won 3rd place from what I’ve been told. Just didn’t have time to drive to Fallon for that show. Maybe next year. My challenge quilt, Quixotic Obsession won a third also. I have three other quilts entered in the Carson Valley Quilt Guild Show, plus the fairy quilt will be on display in the quilting heritage exhibit. That will be five of my quilts on display. I have also been asked to demo my sewing in the exhibit and answer questions both days…..so I’ve dug out a silk blouse that I haven’t fit in in years and making a simple black skirt and maybe I will even dye my hair for the occasion.

I’ve started a new spider web and bugs quilt for the demo because the spiders are always so impressive to everyone.
Lisa in Nevadahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18386098562082656317noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1869250523806699719.post-43892385550939047312012-04-02T19:47:00.001-07:002012-04-02T19:47:47.888-07:00Happy Adoption Day Chinky!
Chinky joined our family 4 years ago today. He must be 8 or 9 years old now. In the time he has been with us he has learned to imitate the sewing machine, a wolf whistle, and…a car alarm. Even older birds can learn new tricks. Need to have it done this weekend. All it needs is the label. Could have sworn I printed one, but I can’t find it. I’ll have to print another. I have it saved on the hard drive on the other computer. I should go ahead and make the label for Arachnophobia:The Sequel while I’m at it. I plan on backing that one this weekend.

The Theme is “Under Western Skies” for the Nevada Quilt Guild Challenge. I do plan on picking it up and playing catch up later this spring. Right now I am preparing for the three quilt shows in Northern Nevada.

I just finished Carson Valley Quilt Guild’s Challenge “A few of my favorite things”…and got third place! The quilts were voted on by the guild. Now it’s currently hanging in the Carson City Library.

The quilt is called “Quixotic Obsession”

Right now I’m working on the Nevada Quilt Guild’s Challenge “Under Western Skies” and this quilt is called “Buffalo Gal Won’t You Come Out Tonight”. I realized that I have about 6 weeks to get a challenge quilt dome for the Nevada Quilt Guild’s show in Fallon, Nevada. The theme is “Under Western Skies”. So I find myself very short on time for other things. I am putting the binding on “Pickled Ginger” when I have a few moments here & there I put a couple of stitches on the back.

A-n-y-w-a-y….I haven’t had time to do my stitches on the pages like I planned. So here is what I have. From the challenge quilts I am working on:

I’ll try harder this week. I promise.

The Massage Therapist grabbed ahold of my tendon while I moved my shoulder into place. Talk about painful! I have bruises. I did feel it go back into place…what a relief! Sure beats surgery. He did tell me I had torn another tendon that held this one in place and so now I have to be careful in how I extend my right arm. Sure is nice to be able to use it again.

My helper, Chinky, is here trying to insinuate himself between me & the keyboard. Pretty soon he’ll climb up on my shoulder and bite my ear. I tried showing him other cockatiels on you tube (that always excited the other birds), but I guess since he is unaware he is a bird so I guess it’s not a biggie to him. He does like his own videos…..runs over to the computer to listen to himself.
Lisa in Nevadahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18386098562082656317noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1869250523806699719.post-87966078010609825782012-02-13T05:45:00.001-08:002012-02-13T05:45:22.814-08:00Take a Stitch Tuesday – Chevron…and stuff
My Chiropractor says that my bicipital tendon has “jumped out of its groove”. It’s a whole new level of pain management. Of course it’s my right arm and I am very right handed. The doctor didn’t even charge me (wow) and recommended a sports massage therapist and warned me “it’s gonna hurt like hell”. Really?

So I call this therapist and when I tell him the problem he hesitates…then says “did the doctor say anything about it?” Sigh….he says the procedure us one of the most painful he does and makes grown men cry. That's something to look forward to (we really need a sarcasm font). So Tuesday I get my first hour of torture. My alternative is an MRI and surgery. Those may still me in my future if he’s not successful in reseating it.

Take a stitch Tuesday week 6. This is an easy stitch…lots and lots of variations and I know I’ve only scratched the surface. Can’t believe I made it….bring on week 7!

Lisa in Nevadahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18386098562082656317noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1869250523806699719.post-735762097559618812012-02-05T09:00:00.001-08:002012-02-05T09:00:52.023-08:00Take a Stitch Tuesday–Herringbone…and stuff
Here are my stitches for week 5. Always a fun stitch, but I never really go “outside the box” on this one.

Been quite a week and I’m sooo glad the caucus is over. It wasn’t as bad as I expected. I was bracing myself for the very worst they could throw at each other. Living in the state capitol makes it so much worse. Mud slinging seems to be a sport here. I hardly turned on the TV this last week.

Yesterday I went to the annual 4H Rummage sale and came home with bags and bags of crazy quilt goodies. Bags of beads and broken jewelry. A cream silk scarf that is huge! trims and goodies. I go back this morning to see if the cabinet that I liked is still there. JoAnn’s has thread for half price anyway…so that’s another excuse to go out.

Pickled Ginger is on the table for basting this morning. Need to get it done before the edges ravel to nothing. This seems to be the one that everyone wants to see.

I gave the little blue fairy to my friend. It was made from a picture of her grand daughter. I took her for surgery that day and she showed it to all the nurses. Now people want my business card. I’m not prepared for this. All the nurses want one (or more). I’m not quite sure how I will handle this…but I guess I need some business cards….

And here is Chinky in his morning preening watching over the Pickled Ginger process. I never bother to close the cage anymore. He knows when bedtime is. I have bowls with treats or food in several places around the sewing room to promote natural foraging behavior. He is a total member of the family. Biggest problem I have is when he tries to follow someone out the front door. He gets so upset when anyone leaves the house. Stands at the door and screams. Silly bird.

Lisa in Nevadahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18386098562082656317noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1869250523806699719.post-23424701630968370352012-02-02T08:42:00.000-08:002012-02-02T08:44:46.915-08:00Pigtales and Quilts: Calling ALL Crazy Quilters!! - Are You Getting Ready For The Show?Pigtales and Quilts: Calling ALL Crazy Quilters!! - Are You Getting Ready For The Show?
I love the buttonhole stitch. It is, in my opinion, the most versatile stitch there is. I can sit and do the butthole stitch all day and never quite repeat a design.

Combined with a fly stitch or French knot there are endless possibilities. Add a cast on and French knots. The laced double buttonhole would make a really nice centipede LOL.

Circles make wonderful wagon wheels or flowers. Crazy quilting I teach, but it’s unstructured. My intent when I joined the guild a few years ago was to make new friends who didn’t think my “hobby” was a dead language and to learn. I’ve taken workshops with the guild, but they were purses. Yesterday was my first “real” quilting class. What a blast! Yes, it’s using steam a seam and it’s a small wall hanging, but it was fun! I didn’t want to leave at the end. I went because a friend from work was taking her first class and is just getting into sewing. What a riot….the quilt shop opened a tab for her!

I, of course, spent way more than I planned.I always do when I walk into that shop. The owner, Beth, is into crazy quilting and embellishment. So as time goes on, her shop becomes more and more embellishment friendly. Last weekend I was in there and bought a yard of lace hand dyed by Elinor Peace Bailey.

I came home and attempted to work on the wall hanging. Guess I was missed. My helper, Chinky, flopped down in the middle of everything and wouldn’t move LOL

Today I am going to put backing on the little blue fairy. The flowers need centers and beading. I need to make fairy wand and glass slippers before I can back and finish. Probably needs a few more bugs and maybe a spider web for luck. Coming along very well and I’m pretty happy with the piece. This will be a good reference to go back to later on.

Didn’t think this was going to be hard, but I had sooo much trouble with fly stitch variations. It’s not a stitch that I use for much. I may have to change that, use it more and work a little harder.

I started with standard fly stitch variations.

Next a little tighter.

Cross Pattern.

Fly Stitch Leaves and Flower.

Lisa in Nevadahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18386098562082656317noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1869250523806699719.post-38769325836405868512012-01-07T08:26:00.001-08:002012-01-07T08:26:11.585-08:002012 Guild Challenge Quilt
This quilt needs to be done soon. It’s my guild challenge quilt for the show this year. I look at it and feel it needs something more. Can’t decide what. The theme is “A Few of My Favorite Things”. I’m just not sure my heart is in it just yet. I will go out and buy backing for it today and maybe that will motivate me.I now have three tops that need backing and finishing for the show…must get motivated!

I’m going out to Fabric Chicks today to sign up for a quilting class next weekend. I find I’m looking forward to learning proper techniques…..If I learn one good thing, it will be worth the time and expense. And I’ll have fun too. I always enjoy hanging out at that store and chatting with the other quilters. I teach a crazy quilt group there on the fourth Saturday of the month and always look forward to it.

I will post my TAST stitches tomorrow.
Lisa in Nevadahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18386098562082656317noreply@blogger.com2
